New Moon 15th March 21:01 GMT

Sun at 25° 10' Pisces
Moon at 25° 10' Pisces

What a joy it is to hear the dawn chorus. With wonder I listen to the bird song, heralding the beginning of the new day. They are the messengers between the earth and sky. It is said that they take the prayers of humans to the Gods and return with a message. Different birds have different symbolic meanings, e.g. buzzards are associated with pampering ourselves and the bluetits’ message is about being resourceful. Connect with the birds in your garden and see which ones are your companions.
The snowdrops are fading away now. The multi-coloured crocuses and yellow trumpet flowers of the daffodils are covering the countryside. Buds are starting to appear on the trees. The days are noticeably longer and warmer. The Sun is gaining in strength. Nature is giving us a loud and clear message that spring is on its way.

The Night Sky

Mars is still to be seen in our evening sky. On the 10th of March it stations before turning direct. Saturn will be at its closest to the Earth on the 22nd of March. This is a good time to view and photograph this beautiful ringed planet. Venus has returned as the evening star. How wonderful it is to be graced with her presence once more.

Mothering Sunday 14th March

Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in lent. In the past, it would have been looked upon as a welcome break from the Lenten fasting that was common practise centuries ago. The tradition would have been to bake a cake known as a Simnel cake. [Latin- simila, fine flour.] This celebration has an affinity with the Roman festival of Cybele, the Mother Goddess and the holy day of Rhea the Greek Goddess of the Earth. To honour Cybele, gifts and offerings would have been taken to her temple; for Rhea, the tradition would have been to acknowledge river sprites or nymphs. In folklore Sprites are small supernatural beings like an elf or a fairy and are associated with water. In mythology, Nymphs are minor goddesses or spirits of nature inhabiting areas of natural beauty such as woods, mountains, and rivers and traditionally take the form of beautiful young women. These festivities would have taken place on the Ides of March, on the 15th of March. This is a time to remember our mothers.

The Chart of the New Moon

This New Moon occurs on the Ides of March. In the chart there are 5 planets in the mutable water sign of Pisces. The Sun, Moon, Mercury and Uranus are in a very tight configuration. Pisces is a sign of contradiction with various different possibilities. Being the compassionate one, it grapples with the diversity of human nature. Pisces is a very forgiving sign, often giving preference to other peoples’ needs over their own. Pisces’ challenge is to take space for themselves. Like their astrological symbol of the two fishes swimming in different direction, they often feel pulled in two. Due to their empathic and sympathetic nature they have a great capacity to understand the suffering of humanity. Pisces’ gift is a vivid imagination and foresight into future possibilities. As Tchenka says in Astro Calendar 2010 let us hope that the collective waves of emotion generated by the Piscean dissolving influence do not involve large scale suffering.

Uranus, discovered in 1781, colours this new Moon. The energy of this planet is to shake things up, bringing about new breakthroughs that give us greater freedom. Uranus asks for integrity, independence and truth. Listen to your intuition; make a note of sudden insights; write down any weird and wonderful dreams you have. With Uranus we have to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. The potential for new possibilities is endless.
The ongoing conjunction of Neptune and Chiron has been in my mind quite a lot. These two planets ride together through the zodiac for a long time. Neptune, the planet that rules Pisces, connects us to our spirituality and Chiron is the wounded healer, it often represents the unfairness of historical and social injustices such as war and natural disasters. The thought that keeps coming to me, is that they hold the potential for the healing of wounds in religious matters.

The Spring Equinox 20th March

This is the midpoint between the Winter and Summer Solstices. It is the time when day and night are of equal length. The Sun is directly overhead at the Equator and enters the sign of Aries, marking the beginning of a new astrological cycle. Winter is over and Spring has begun. Seeds that were planted at the Winter Solstice start to germinate. Celebrate the return of the light and the lengthening of the days.

The Full Moon 30th March

The energy of the full Moon is very different that of the new Moon. The Sun and Moon are square to Pluto, the planet of transformation. The resources of the earth could be very much in the news. One thing I have noticed since our harsh winter, is the bad state of our roads. This for me, is one representation of the cracking up of our infra structure! The full Moon falls in the sign of Aries. This sign is optimistic and pioneering, so new projects could be afoot.

So I leave you with a quote: “dreams are part of our hearts and soul. Our dreams go to the depth of our thoughts, wants and needs to fulfil our destiny. In order to fulfil our destiny we must fulfil our dreams.” By J.R. Davis 1994

Blessing of this time to you all. Linda Day.
